Liberty Corner Church is committed to increasing local awareness about the orphan crisis in Malawi, and offering hands-on volunteer opportunities for adults and students who want to make a difference.
Malawi is a densely populated, underdeveloped country in southeastern Africa. AIDS is the leading cause of death among adults, and that has resulted in an orphan crisis affecting almost 1 million children.
In June 2008, Liberty Corner Church sent a task force to Malawi to evaluate the effectiveness of local service providers, the use of financial assistance and the need for volunteers. The task force worked with several local service providers, including Ministry of Hope.
Ministry of Hope was established in 1999 by Malawians as a local, community-based response for meeting the physical and spiritual needs of the growing number of children orphaned by the AIDS epidemic. Staff and volunteers operate seven feeding centers serving about 4,000 children each day, plus two crisis nursery centers serving 60 infants per month.
